The Importance Of Moisturisers

15 Jul 2019 by Myreen Young

When you think of skincare, the first thing that springs to mind is usually moisturisers. Helping to improve skin elasticity as well as reduce wrinkles, moisturisers help to keep skin hydrated. Keeping skin hydrated is essential, which many are unaware of. If a moisturiser isn’t used, our skin tends to feel tight and look dull. In this blog, we’re going to look at the importance of moisturisers, exploring the type of moisturisers available as well as how often you should be moisturising.

Why Moisturise?

Helping your skin to feel clearer, smoother and more hydrated, moisturising helps to fight many skin issues. The face is one of the most sensitive areas of your skin and is an area in which regenerates skin cells at a faster rate; this is because the face is more exposed to elements. With this in mind, moisturising helps to ensure that the skin is getting the protection it needs to help keep it healthy. Therefore, it’s incredibly important to ensure our skin stays looking and feeling healthy, and young!

Many are unaware of how important it is to keep our skin hydrated; dehydrated skin can lead to breakouts, as well as inflammation. Moisturiser is the perfect base for makeup; if the skin isn’t hydrated beforehand, makeup will stick to the dry areas and create an un-flawless finish.

Which Moisturiser Should I get?

One moisturiser does not fit all skin types, which moisturiser you opt for will depend on your skin type. There are numerous moisturiser types, those which are formulated for day or night use, ones which target specific skin types, as well as ones which help combat certain skin issues. Moisturisers can come in the form of a cream, lotion or ointment.

If your skin is dry or you suffer from eczema, for example, you’ll most likely need an ointment, this is because it’s thicker. If you’ve got a normal skin type, then usually a cream is the perfect way to keep your skin hydrated. If you’ve got oily skin, then a lotion is the perfect match, as the main ingredient used is water. It’s also crucial to remember that throughout the year, with the change of seasons, it’s highly likely you’ll need to adapt the products you use as your skin will require different levels of moisture.

How Should I Moisturise?

The best time to moisturise is when your skin is still moist, such as right after a shower or bath. Damp skin allows your skin to absorb the moisturiser better and therefore, locks in the products for longer.

When applying moisturiser, you don’t want to use too much product as this can clog the pores. Apply the cream, lotion or ointment evenly around your face and blend out, ensuring you don’t rub too harshly on your skin. Top tip: don’t forget to moisturise your neck too as this is one area which shows early signs of ageing!

How Often Should I Moisturise?

Moisturising your face should be done twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening. Most skin types will require two different products, one for day time use and a thicker moisturiser for the evening. During the day you’d want a lighter moisturiser with SPF to help protect skin from UV rays. Overnight skin is given time to regenerate and repair itself; therefore, night moisturisers are thicker and richer to work in unison with this.
